FROM SPOKESMAN TO STATESMAN: Celebrating Otunba Sokoya’s One Year Of Trailblazing Leadership At AMORAN

Today, August 6, 2025 marks exactly one year since Otunba Taofeek Sokoya (a.k.a DANKU) assumed the mantle of leadership as the Chairman of the Articulate Motorcycle Owners And Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN) in Ogun state.

Before his unanimous election by the State Executive Council and branch chairmen on August 6, 2024, Otunba Sokoya had served meritoriously as the union’s Public Relations Officer (PRO). His rise to the helm was occasioned by the resignation of the former Chairman, Otunba Nurudeen Aina Alowonle, leaving a vacuum only one man seemed adequately prepared to fill.

Widely regarded as approachable, competent and deeply committed to the ideals of responsible unionism, Otunba Sokoya was the natural choice. His colleagues saw in him a man of vision, discipline and capability and in the end, they were not mistaken.

From his first day in office, Otunba Sokoya set out to redefine what union leadership should represent. His tenure has been marked by transformative policies, particularly those centered on member welfare and rebranding the public perception of the union.

Under his stewardship, AMORAN has taken bold steps to educate its members on civility, discipline and orderliness in the discharge of their duties, especially in the area of ticketing operations. He consistently discouraged violence and unprofessional conduct, insisting that AMORAN must be seen as a responsible organization, not a den of miscreants as often mischaracterized.

He has repeatedly emphasized, especially during the union's monthly extended executive meetings in Abeokuta,  that the transport sector is a viable source of employment, not just for the unlettered, but even for graduates who now find dignity in motorcycle transportation as a means of livelihood. This message has helped reshape the mindset of many riders, giving them a renewed sense of pride and purpose.

Central to Otunba Sokoya’s leadership philosophy is compassion and solidarity. He has made members’ welfare a priority, ensuring that riders involved in accidents or facing medical emergencies are given adequate support. He has also provided financial assistance to members with pressing personal needs.

*"We are not just a union — we are a family," he often says.*

*"It is not enough to serve as an intermediary between riders and government. We must stand by one another, especially in times of need."*

This practical demonstration of empathy has strengthened unity and morale within the union.

In a rare and commendable move, Otunba Sokoya empowered all five former chairmen of the union with generous financial packages and this gesture did not only honor their past service but also set a standard for institutional memory and respect within the union.

He also initiated and completed the review and amendment of the union’s constitution, a long-overdue reform that has now brought clarity, balance and fairness to the internal governance structure of AMORAN.

In addition, he renovated the union’s state secretariat, giving it a modern facelift and boosting its operational functionality and this further points to his belief in running the union as a structured and professional body.

*'DANKU'* as often called by friends and associates,  has maintained a firm commitment to peace and lawfulness, ensuring that the union operates in harmony and aligns with the developmental vision of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON.

He is quick to credit his achievements not to personal brilliance, but to the collective effort of his executive council and loyal members across the state. As a team player, he acknowledges that the progress recorded so far would not have been possible without their support and shared commitment to change.

As Otunba Taofeek Sokoya marks one year in office, the atmosphere within AMORAN is one of unity and purposeful drive. His leadership has brought credibility and dignity to the union.

Mr. Chairman Sir, as you complete this 365 days jourmey of purposeful leadership for the union, we pray that the years will be even greater.  Thank you for your service!
